In the modern digital world there is a set of various ways of submission of digital multimedia information.
Of course, to transfer analog information to a digital form, the special programs creating the file (we will call it the container), which contains all audio and video information are necessary.
The container – the fundamental file serving for preservation in a digital form of the transformed analog information (i.e. that we see and we hear in real life). As a rule, such information kept by audio and video occupies large volume therefore it is squeezed, using various audio and video codecs. All office for work with this file, as a rule, are established together with an operating system.
The codec – reduction from English Coder/Decoder – the program allowing to transform the written-down information so that it took less places. Thus extension of the file can not change, i.e. the main structure of the container will not change, will change representation in it of audio and video data but to reproduce such file "ciphered" by means of any codec it is necessary that it was established on the user's computer.

Our compatriots created a new format of the container for audio and video of data which as they speak, "is created with a view to the future". It is the open project, the official site of this www.matroska.org project.
They called this container "Nested doll", and reduction of a format – mkv – came from a transliteration of this word: (Matroska – mk + v, v – as you guessed, video).
The name displays structure of the container – it is really very similar to metryoshechny structure.
InfoAdvisor.net would like to pay your attention that at the time of the publication of this article the mkv format is not so widespread as AVI, but gradually gains popularity. Perhaps, through some time it will force out AVI as in it more opportunities are initially put.
Main advantages of mkv
What in it such special, in this freely extended container? Of course, InfoAdvisor.net cannot but tell and about mkv format shortcomings. Perhaps, the main minus of this format is rather small prevalence, and also lack of the built-in support from OS of Windows family – it is necessary to put additional programs for its reproduction.
Than to open and how to watch mkv files?Option 1: packages of codecs
It would be quite good to see, likely, the file in mkv a format on your favourite player, huh? But here trouble – it does not support this format. Though not such it is already a problem. You only should establish the additional software package on your personal computer.
But at first it is necessary to be defined – you want to use all opportunities of this format or not? Installation too the very simple: choose a place where to put files,
then put everything that offer, except for, perhaps, players.

- We remove a tick from the player, we note that we should put all DirectShow filters.
- We choose options for XviD: XviD 1.2, for DivX – DivX 6.08, for H264 – ffdshow.
- Further we scroll the list to MPEG, we choose for MPEG2 – Cyberlink, for MPEG1 – Main Concept. I already installed these codecs therefore I noted – System Default, i.e. to leave system.
- For VC1 we put Use System Default, we choose everything from Other Video Formats.
- In DirectShow audio decoding filters we choose everything.
- In Other Audio Formats and DirectShow audio Parsers also we choose everything.
- In DirectShow source Filters we leave everything as recommend to us.
- In VFW Video Codecs also we leave everything by default.
- Tools likely are not necessary to most of users (section Tools). We remove a tick.
- And here in the section Miscellaneous on the contrary we note everything. We press Next.
After installation your computer has codecs and containers for all occasions – you will be able to see videos practically in all formats.

Likely, will seem to some that it is better to use the players which are specially intended for reproduction of a mkv-format. Perhaps, they will be right. Especially as there are free players.
The note from InfoAdvisor.net: if the player is capable to reproduce the file in a mkv-format is does not mean that he is not able to reproduce other formats.
Here players for which installation of the additional software for viewing of the mkv format is not required are described. The player supports skins and the very functional is very simple in use, but at the same time. Its main advantage – consumes few system resources that gives the chance of work on weak computers, and also availability of options without installation. The second player for which installation additional is not required ON, recommended by founders of the mkv format is Zoomplayer. Zoomplayer uses DirectShow filters. Thus labels in the main menu for some reason were not created.
The player very beautiful, opportunities at it approximately same as at Windows Media Player and practically any modern player respecting itself (an equalizer, various multimedia libraries, navigators, etc.), registration reminds the same Windows Media, system resources consumes respectively, but at everything thus it is also simple in use, as VLC. There are various operating modes (media the mode when the window for video playback, by audio the mode when this window is not displayed, etc. is displayed). For work it does not need DirectShow filters, it takes least of all places from the players considered above and consumes least of all system resources. He does not demand installation, occupies only 1,5 Mb in the unpacked look. It looks so as if descended from the PDA screen – all one - in - one, even the settings window to pain reminds a PDA. Settings the same and pretty extensive so if to close eyes to the interface forcing to feel nostalgic for those far, irrevocably left times when Windows 95 was considered as the most abrupt operatsionka, and the computer with a clock frequency of 200 MHz is there was something unreal, it is very good player. However, if use of it on a PDA did not cause any complaints in me, at start on "the big brother" the amusing glitch was found in me – the gap was absolutely cut down. Players under Linux were not considered as, as a rule, who has this OS, already know that it is specifically necessary for them – and already very long time ago put it and will hardly change.
We considered the quite good, promising mkv format. What we can make forecasts for the future? Undoubtedly, this format justifies itself as in it more opportunities, than in other formats are concluded. Now at some household models of DVD players there is a support of this format. Over time for certain such models will become more. Who knows, maybe, through a two-three of years we will already pass to the new standard of storage video and audiothis.
